Michael Lindsay articles for next week's Winter Colloquy

You've seen some of these if you've been dilligent checking OCLC FirstSearch in NexLearn, but these links come to us courtesy of DBU's own Doctoral Research Librarian, Dr. John Jaeger. Have a look at these entries by and about our featured speaker:

All is safely gathered in

Just in time for Thanksgiving, we've reached the 1,500 mark in BHCTILibraryToo, with a few dozen titles left in our "Area of Concentration" Missions (Worship and Missions "Subject Cluster," or WMMIS for short). Combined with the 2,500 titles gathered and tagged to BHCTI Subject Clusters and Areas of Concentration available at BHCTILibrary "Proper," we've hit (at long last) 4,000 readily accessable titles in the Google Book Libraries. Next numerical target will be 5K....

Looks good from a distance

Still climbing the hill on BHCTILibraryToo (Too for short), adding titles in our Area of Concentration Missions. Have a peak at the latest...

And a bit more, too

Our growing collection of free full text (i.e., full view) Google Books stowed at BHCTILibraryToo (Too for short) just got a little bit bigger today. Still soldiering on with the project...

Too long gone

...but I'm back in the saddle with some additions to Too under our Missions area of concentration (WMMIS). Documentation for accreditation has my focus, but I don't want to neglect our growing Google Book libraries...

Tuesday, September 1, 2009

Okay, 3.7K so far...

I'm still 300 titles short of the next mile marker in the combined GoogleBooks libraries, but as Tolkien famously said in the LOTR preface, I had "other duties I did not neglect." But we are still hacking away in Missions- you can see the results in 'Too to date.

Back on Mission

About 50 titles from the Missions area of concentration (Worship and Missions 'cluster') were added to BHCTILibraryToo today- the work is slow, but continues...

Sidelight on Bhctilibrary Wiki

This wiki is a sandbox-worthy version of how to search our NexLearn resources, and to (I hope) disambiguate our bibliographic instruction. Go there to learn how to search OCLC FirstSearch, Seminary Library, Questia, Oxford Reference Online, Grove Music Online, our '07 list of Online Resources; plus directives back to BHCTILibrary "Proper" and BHCTILibraryToo, as well as this page. Once the kinks are all worked out, some version of it will be added to NexLearn, but feel free to visit and edit meanwhile...

New titles from old bibs

55 titles new just added to Too are a bit off topic, but still relevant; I'd spotted these as Full Text Google Books while reviewing 2007 faculty bibs, and saw they weren't in any of our collections. They're here now! The majority are under the Philosophy "area of concentration," (MFPHI), but some other clusters are also represented.

Sidelight on Seminary Library

Here's a pair of Apologetics titles instructors recommend, that you can find in full text in Seminary Library via NexLearn:
  • Theism and Humanism by Arthur James Balfour
  • Fundamental Ideas of Christianity by John Caird

Think of Seminary Library for pre-1923 imprints in theological disciplines- the quality of their reproductions, and the more targeted nature of their collection, can make their material worthwhile in comparision to other material available for free on the 'net.

Sidelight on Pastoral Care

Just a plug for two journals on the subject (aka Practical Theology) in Full text in NexLearn (use OCLC FirstSearch for the ATLA and Wilson Full Text to access); Counseling and Values, and Journal of Pastoral Care. I ought to do this more often!

3.5K combined

The 3,500 reviewed mark was reached today in the combined BHCTILibrary collections; 2.5K remains in "Proper," and there are now 1.K in "Too." As previously noted, the "reviews"consist primarilly of OCLC data and LCCN placements; but the latter is important to SACS, and when coordinated with labeling (our existing 16 BHCTI subject areas and 4 subject "clusters," which all extant entries already enjoy- the LC class is being added to the labels as each are found), I think it gives a good indication why entries fit their subjects- that they are relevant for us. The bulk of "Too" items are in the Worship and Church Music Areas of Concentration, and will grow to a similar number of Missions entries moving forward.

Missions next

Perhaps I should distinguish this as a subspecies of Church History, or bifurcate Home and Foreign variety in the fading nomeclature of my denomination- later. For now, there are some choice things to add under our Carroll Area of Concentration Missions (WMMIS) to Too. This'll put bulk onto the collection well past my short-term 4K target...

Church Music plays out

Still a bit under 4K, but all my initially identifed Google Books for Church Music area of concentration (cluster WM) have been added to BHCTILibraryToo as of today. Stay tuned for my next target!

More from the Colloquy

Stand by for my contribution to the Dissertation Writer's Workshop; I'm going to find it a more permanent home elsewhere. More in a bit...

For Baptist History

Still 150 titles short of my 4K goal, but while you wait, enjoy our Baptist History Colloquy vicariously with this Googlebook title: Grave's Tri-lemma is here for your review.

New and notable

I've just added a new title from GoogleBooks based on a faculty recommendation from a bibliography; enjoy Farrar's History of Interpretation. Still working on that next 1K in BHCTILibraryToo...

50 more at Too

Moving forward on the originally found 10K Googlebooks, under area of concentration Church Music (Carroll abbreviation WMCMU) in BHCTILibraryToo. Watch this space as we fill it in...

Number crunching

94% of the combined libraries Googlebooks holdings fit in the SACS area of "Humanities and General Works" (2,821 books of 3K), with the next closest area, "Social Sciences" taking up a mere 142 items (4%, and these mostly classified as Church History). I can start adding new titles to the Church Music area of concentration in BHCTIToo on Monday. Nice to be able to move forward (as opposed to just catching up) again...

3K combined

Unless I miss my count, BHCTILibrary proper is full and fully accounted for. Whew! Analysis to date of the combined collections tomorrow.

2.5K combined

Progress spead up over the weekend; only 500 or so to be complete with OCLC data in BHCTILibrary proper....

Friday, March 27, 2009

2K combined reviews

The next mark of 1,500 "reviewed" in BHCTILibrary proper was reached today; when added to the 500 in BHCTILibraryToo, that reachs the 2K mark in the combined collections. As previously noted, the "reviews"consist primarilly of OCLC data and LCCN placements; but the latter is important to SACS, and when coordinated with labeling (our existing 16 BHCTI subject areas and 4 subject "clusters," which all extant entries already enjoy- the LC class is being added to the labels as each are found), I think it gives a good indication why entries fit their subjects- that they are relevant for us. I can't promise I'll keep on the retroactive reviewing of the 2.5K in BHCTILibrary proper without adding more Church Music entries to the 500 in BHCTILibraryToo; but I might. Only 1K left needing retrospection in "Proper" now.... As you may remember, "proper" is now stuffed full; once "too" is filled, I'll be placing another Google Library until all previously located (and subsequently identified) finds are accessable....

Some print progress

The MARC records of our core gift of print books, the Newport Collection, have been examined with SACS in mind. I'm pleased to report that the 4,309 items cataloged (approximately 27% of our total print collection) are clearly relevant to our collection needs, with 4,060 items belonging to the "Humanities and General Works" area. How gratifying to be able to say with precision just how fitting this gift is to Carroll.

1.5K combined reviews

The next mark of 1,000 "reviewed" in BHCTILibrary proper was reached today; when added to the 500 in BHCTILibraryToo, that reachs the 1.5K mark in the combined collections. I can't promise I'll keep on the retroactive reviewing of the 2.5K in BHCTILibrary proper without adding more Church Music entries to the 500 in BHCTILibraryToo; but I might. and a bit more Questia

A few more print titles we own that Questia has:
  • Jesus Christ : the risen Lord (by Filson)
  • The knowledge of God in Calvin's theology (by Dowey)

A sideline on our purpose, but worth reporting.

a sidelight on Questia

I'm currently examining records for 4,309 books in our print collection from recently recovered files, and am pleased to note some titles don't have to wait to be unboxed to be seen. NexLearn users with access to Questia can find these titles and more:
  • The eschatology of Paul (by Shires)
  • The failure of theology in modern literature (by Killinger)
  • The Christology of the New Testament (by Cullmann)
  • The mission and achievement of Jesus (by Fuller)
  • The promise of Heschel (by Sherman)
  • The problem of evil (by King)

That's 6 books of 50 examined today; not a bad percentage, to my mind. I'll have to keep everyone updated. Additionally, Questia has full text books we don't own in hardcopy, and comes highly recommended.

Getting on the same page

Many thanks to Amanda Crane at Carroll, who's thoughfully viewed my page and reminded me of an upgrade in BHCTI nomenclature; we sport a total of 16 "areas of concentration" under four umbrella "clusters" in organizing our teaching content areas. For example:
Our Faith & Heritage cluster has the 4 areas of concentration Church History, Ethics, Philosophy, and Theology. Watch this space for further disambiguation!

Might consider it

I've not had time yet to tweak my attempt at making our libraries searchable with Rollyo, but I see Google's added a for profit facility to search sites at http://www.google.com/sitesearch/ which I may consider once I can pony up the entry fee... More on that later.

1.1K reviews combined

Just realized I'd crossed the 600 "reviewed" mark in BHCTILibrary proper; when added to the 500 in BHCTILibraryToo, that reachs the 1K mark in the combined collections. Admittedly, the "reviews"consist primarilly of OCLC data and LCCN placements; but the latter is more vital to SACS, and when coordinated with labeling (our existing 16 BHCTI subject "clusters," which all extant entries already enjoy- the LC class is being added to the labels as each are found), I think it gives a good indication why entries fit their clusters- that they are relevant for us. I can't promise I'll keep on the retroactive reviewing of the 2.5K in BHCTILibrary proper without adding more Church Music entries to the 500 in BHCTILibraryToo; but I might. As you may remember, "proper" is now stuffed full; once "too" is filled, I'll be placing another Google Library until all previously located (and subsequently identified) finds are accessable....

Too at 500

Adding primarily Google ebooks in Church Music (BHCTI subject cluster WMCMU) in BHCTILibraryToo; and made a few additional LCCN finds to entries already registered in BHCTILibrary proper. First new catches of the New Year!
