Fun Facts

In Summer 2007, I'd found a total of 10,019 full text books (mostly Google Books, but some from CCEL and Project Gutenberg) I considered relevant to our BHCTI collection. In moving those titles slowly out into BHCTILibrary and its sister annex, BHCTILibraryToo, I've crunched some interesting numbers:
  • 89 links (to date) no longer lead to a full view Google Book (pehaps human error?)
  • a total in both libraries (to date) yields 2,971 books already made available (1,609 from the original lists, and 1,362 newly found this Fall).
  • While all 2,971 books have been assigned (at least preliminarilly) with a BHCTI "cluster" subject, only a total of 757 (297 in BHCTI Library proper, 460 in Too) have LCCNs assignments.

Just goes to show, there's work yet to be done!

Back in the saddle

Have been roping a few LCCNs and OCLC numbers at BHCTILibrary proper following a long spell of SACS documentation revision. More tomorrow!

Worship WMWOR cluster gathered in

The last few took longest, but all the initially selected entries from Google Books for Worship (BHCTI subject cluster WMWOR) are gathered in BHCTIToo and number 472 total items. Duplicates and items that were not (or perhaps are no longer?) on this examination designated "Full View" were dropped- approximately 30 titles were eliminated. OCLC numbers, subject headings, and Library of Congress Call Numbers (the last item particularly requested in SACS documentation for sorting and reporting purposes) have been roughed in for each entry. The next cluster to be worked in into BHCTIToo is Church Music- keep watching this space. My plan is to complete adding our previously selected items for accounting to SACS before beginning to find new materials.

Sidelight on the Colloquy

For those who have attended the Colloquy in Arlington this week, a selection of Dr. Bruce W. Winter's previous articles can be read in full text in by logging into NexLearn and searching for him by name in FirstSearch; and selected texts in his notes (including Kloppenborg's Voluntary Associations in the Graeco-Roman World) are available in full text in Questia. Feel free to explore!

Too at 300

The Rollyo link below is not fully functional- but I'll not let that prevent my persevering with the project; BHCTILibraryToo now stands at 300 entries, and will continue growing.

Rollyo

Can I combine searching in both BHCTILibraries? My first go is below: The BHCTILibraries search roll at Rollyo is attempted at http://www.rollyo.com/index.html and the Text should be

Back to Too

Despite some incremental work on BHCTILibrary's 2.5K to add particularly LCCNs in prep for SACS reporting, no further titles are yet able to be added in that library. Meantime, I'm adding to BHCTILibraryToo and adding the data to each new entry, to minimize backtracking. Both jobs are going on as a kind of tag-team approach.

Too hits 100

Our Annex at BHCTILibraryToo reached 100 today- nearly a quarter of the total first found for the cluster Worship WMWOR. Some review at BHCTILibrary proper scheduled for today.

Thursday, October 30, 2008

BHCTILibraryToo at 50

50 Googlebooks from our original list (last Summer's) Worship (Cluster WMWOR) are added to the first "Annex" at BHCTILibraryToo so far. Moving a bit more slowly in order to obtain more complete records for SACS (especially the addition of LCCNs); there'll be less backtracking in this collection than at BHCTILibrary proper.

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Worship commences

The first entries in BHCTILibraryToo are for Worship (cluster WMWOR); more tomorrow.

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

BHCTILibraryToo

Ann's GoogleBooks account has been generously donated at BHCTILibraryToo for more additions; the first sample entry has been made, and should be accessable.

A bit more

Still working on adding LCCNs to the 2.5K in BHCTILibrary, in prep for SACS reporting

Increments

Google tecs recommend no more than 2K in a library, but I'm experiencing 2.5 as the firm ceiling; will begin to populate a "new" library next week. There are some options to federate searching between free websites, so we needn't worry about interoperability even if the projected 20K are spread over 10 libraries...
Meanwhile, have added OCLC#, LCSHs, and LCCNs to the most recent 50 of the BHCTILibrary entries- will keep building on these for SACS....

A way forward

Nothing new from Google techs yet, but some judicious excisions and extractions confirm for my purpose the 2.5K ceiling of my Google Books BHCTILibrary account. The next 2.5K (to a total of 5K) will be placed in an "Annex" generously provided by Mrs. Day. More on that tomorrow- I am meanwhile hunting more OCLC# and LCCNs for the first 2.5K.

Temporarily arrested development

Glad I've been checking my ceiling- nothing I've tried adding today in excess of 2.5K into BHCTILibrary has taken. No documentation found that says this is a ceiling- but I've emailed the Google Book techies to see what's up. Several getarounds are possible, if needed.

Meantime, I'm gilding my lillies by finding OCLC #s, LCSHs, and LCCNs for found items (and when available, HathiTrust links) and squirreling them away in my "Review" section. Only the LCCNs are being turned into Tags; SACS will want to know what size the collection is, and percentages of the total being applicable to BHCTI by LCCN.

BHCTILibrary in Google Books hits 2.5K

Back to Biblical Interpretation, and I've marked 2,500 into the collection; roughly double what's been intially found in those clusters previously investigated. Still building, there'll be some deconstruction later.

A brief dogsleg

Work on Biblical Interpretation (cluster SWBIT) was briefly sidelined by Biblical Languages (cluster SWBLA), but I should be back on my more deliberate strategy tomorrow. Total take on all topics in Google Books BHCTILibrary is now 2,314.

Monday, October 20, 2008

Biblical Interpretation reaches 500

So far, 537 entries grouped under Biblical Interpretation (cluster SWBIT) in BHCTILibrary at Google Books. Book total is 1,585 thus far, and we're just getting warmed up. More tomorrow.

Biblical Interpretation commences

Biblical Intepretation (cluster SWBIT) took my fancy this morning, and previously gleaned Google Books materials have been added to the BHCTILibrary on this heading. I'll begin looking for new items in Google Books to flesh this out this afternoon.

Evangelism breaks 1000

Zeal has consumed me; and though clever, ingenious, and sober methods of continuing on in this vein will occur to me, I'm temporarilly content to move again to some previously discovered materials in a different "cluster," I will for the moment stand pat with 1,044 titles placed under Evangelism (WMEVA) in our Google Books BHCTILibrary.

But I'll return to these so far amassed gleanings to tinker. Not only will some be appropriately listed (even double listed) in other clusters, I plan also to mine for Library of Congress Call Numbers (LCSH) when possible; our SACS application asks for a report of materials broken down by LCSHs.

Evangelism at 600

Progress is being made on the Evangelism cluster (catalog WMEVA) selections in our Google Books BHCTILibrary; items above 411 are new finds (but don't preclude subsequent entries that will be appropriate to more than one cluster; more on that a bit later).

Evangelism reaches first marker

Eliminating duplicates and bad links brought my initial Evangelism list of titles to just 471 Google Books; the next step is to search anew for more recently-added material. Since I'm moving from a set of knowns to unknowns, progress may be slowed, but will still be steady.

Evangelism soldiers on

We're broken the 400 mark in total Google Books titles in BHCTILibrary, and there's more to come under the clusters Evangelism and WMEVA.

More in the morning

Other projects intervened today, though there are the two Administration ebooks (with appropriate tabs) bring our total of Google Books listed to 302. Look for more tomorrow.

Monday, October 13, 2008

Evangelism continued

The BHCTILibrary of Google Books has grown to 301 of approximately 500 titles, all to date under the Carroll cluster of Evangelism (course subject area abbreviation WMEVA); will continue to bulldog this area to bulk it up.

Thursday, October 9, 2008

Progress on Evangelism in Google Books

Just the first 93 entries (so far) for Evangelism and WMEVA logged back in Google Books under BHCTILibrary; this may take a bit....

Evangelism Cluster

One example from over 500 gleaned to date from Google Books serves as representative of the BHCTI subject cluster Evangelism (abbreviated WMEVA in the Carroll catalog):

Eccentric Preachers: Contains an Essay on Billy Bray
By Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Spurgeon
Published by Passmore and Alabaster, 1879
224 pages

Be on the lookout for an experiment on posting the full list.

Administration Cluster

Two resources that appear to me to fit well under the BHCTI subject cluster Administration (abbreviated in the Carroll catalog as MFADM) are taken from Google Books as listed below:

Skill in Communication: A Vital Element in Effective Management
By David D. Acker
Published by DIANE Publishing, 1992
ISBN 1568061897, 9781568061894
129 pages
http://books.google.com/books?id=iasySTmS0KcC

Extraordinary Black Book: An Exposition of Abuses in Church and State, Courts of Law, Representation, Municipal and Corporate Bodies : with a Précis of the House of Commons, Past, Present, and to Come
By John Wade
Published by Effingham Wilson, 1832
683 pages
http://books.google.com/books?id=zCIwAAAAMAAJ

More mining for ebooks for this cluster is possible from this source.

BHCTI Subject Clusters

Carroll arranges and teaches courses in 16 different subject areas or "clusters." In hunting for free, full text ebooks in online resources such as Google Books, Project Gutenberg, and others, I've made attempts (some halting) to label found resources to these 16 Clusters. Some are much more robustly represented than others.

Welcome

Friends,

You're reached the unofficial page of the librarian at BHCTI- more on me and my work at http://www.bhcti.org/support/ask-the-librarian.html

There is functionality, especially with ebooks, that isn't quite ready for prime time on any official BHCTI page; I want to give a little window into it here for the interested and ambitious. Hence the name, "Sandbox."

My inspirational verse for the page is found at John 8:6b.

My aspirational quote, "if a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly" is traced to G.K. Chesterton. Anyone looking for a good read from him will (IMHO) be best served by his Man Who Was Thursday at Project Gutenberg.
