The game's afoot with the BHCTI Catalog

Closing in at last on the proposed BHCTI Library Catalog through American Biblical Higher Education's ABHE Solutions, though I've yet to have a clickable link for the stinker; The first iteration will feature individual links to all the items in both of our affliated GoogleBook libraries, BHCTILibrary 'Proper,' and BHCTILibraryToo, as well as Logos Bible Software's stand-alone website of full text ebooks at Books.Logos.com, and in addition all the content of ebook vendor Questia (and not only the 5,000 or so free full text items).

Those who recall our long relationship at BHCTI with Questia will remember that though the company sells individual accounts, Carroll has set these up for our students through student fees. The catalog will still require an individual login for any Questia content outside their 5,000 freebies; but Carroll students will know their accounts, or can ask...

A part of our 20,000 or so print collection (approximately 4,000 MARC records) will also be included. I hope in time to coordinate those catalog records with my available print items.

All in all, having author, title, and subject access to 75% or so of our items across vendors and platforms is a serious improvement, and (with apologies to Samurai Jack) 'an historic victory most worthy of our logs.' Or blogs. We should have the bugbots dispensed with before the month is out, so keep watching this space (and my wiki)...

One benefit of being out to hear Dr. Hargraves at our Summer Colloquy has been the opportunity (in the interstices) to unpack boxes of books to arrange on the inviting shelfspace provided in the new Carroll Digs. So the number of items whose physical location I can vouch for gained slightly, up 66 from 135 to 202 as of June. The revised list is at a special page here on my wiki for the curious....

You will notice that some of the resources and links in Carroll Institute's website have been combined or shifted to other menu sections. These modifications are in preparation for our transition to a new administrative interface -- ABHE Solutions. ABHE Solutions is the new platform for student records and class registration. Current students will soon be receiving more information and specific instructions related to class registration for the Summer term.

A catalog to centralize our collection of data and serve as a multiplier of access points has been an ongoing need at Carroll; and through ABHE, we soon ought to have one. Watch this space for updates- and on a faster basis than in the last 6 months, guaranteed....

Choose a 'bookshelf' related to a Carroll 'area of concentration', for instance, 'Foundations of Education.'
Or, type in a search (like Martin Luther) in the search box under my name.

Slow build

Development of my wiki (focused mostly on Library Instruction and expanding web site listings) and the reigns of teaching BHCTI 5000 (Gateway) for BHCTI has not stopped me entirely on my quest to place 10K or so full-view ebooks I'd discovered into Google Book libraries where they can be found easily and sorted by Library of Congress letter ranges, BHCTI areas of concentration, and suchlike 'bookshelves;' but it has sure slowed me down. We hit 1,600 'reviewed' items in the second collection, BHCTILibraryToo ('Too' for short) today; that makes our combined take about 4,100 items in both current collections (the other is located at the first BHCTILibrary, the BHCTILibrary proper, so to speak; therefore, 'Proper' for short). If Google retains its current ceilings of 2.5K titles per collection, I've got about 1.4K left to add to 'Too' before I create a third Googlebook library; I'm going to try speeding that process up with weekly adds there, and updates here. It's been my hope for a while now; and like Bilbo hoping for his eggs and toast in the Hobbit, 'not for the last time.' Stay tuned...

Winter Colloquy's coming, and you may want to bone up on your invited presenters ahead of time.

There are quite a few full text articles of Merold Westphal available in our ATLA databases (now on the Ebsco platform); I'd submit his 2003 piece for the Christian Century, 'Blindspots: Christianity and Postmodern Culture' will give you an advanced taste of his substance and style.
Similarly, B. Keith Putt surely scores a birdie with 'Risking love and the divine "perhaps:"postmodern poetics of a vulnerable God' in 2007's Summer issue of Perspectives in Religious Studies.

You may already know from the Carroll Homepage that Calvin Miller is to be our featured speaker at the Spring Colloquy next month; you might even know the Colloquy topic will be "Christianity and Literature."

Does "Art" sound like an awfully broad topic to you? Go wide with Oxford Reference, or go deep by exploring the Cambridge Literary Histories in NexLearn's Cambridge Histories Online (CHO).

Just in time for Thanksgiving, we've reached the 1,500 mark in BHCTILibraryToo, with a few dozen titles left in our "Area of Concentration" Missions (Worship and Missions "Subject Cluster," or WMMIS for short). The 3,500 reviewed mark was reached today in the combined BHCTILibrary collections; 2.5K remains in "Proper," and there are now 1.K in "Too." As previously noted, the "reviews"consist primarilly of OCLC data and LCCN placements; but the latter is important to SACS, and when coordinated with labeling (our existing 16 BHCTI subject areas and 4 subject "clusters," which all extant entries already enjoy- the LC class is being added to the labels as each are found), I think it gives a good indication why entries fit their subjects- that they are relevant for us. The bulk of "Too" items are in the Worship and Church Music Areas of Concentration, and will grow to a similar number of Missions entries moving forward.

The MARC records of our core gift of print books, the Newport Collection, have been examined with SACS in mind. I'm pleased to report that the 4,309 items cataloged (approximately 27% of our total print collection) are clearly relevant to our collection needs, with 4,060 items belonging to the "Humanities and General Works" area. How gratifying to be able to say with precision just how fitting this gift is to Carroll.

I'm currently examining records for 4,309 books in our print collection from recently recovered files, and am pleased to note some titles don't have to wait to be unboxed to be seen. NexLearn users with access to Questia can find these titles and more:

In Summer 2007, I'd found a total of 10,019 full text books (mostly Google Books, but some from CCEL and Project Gutenberg) I considered relevant to our BHCTI collection. In moving those titles slowly out into BHCTILibrary and its sister annex, BHCTILibraryToo, I've crunched some interesting numbers:

89 links (to date) no longer lead to a full view Google Book (pehaps human error?)
a total in both libraries (to date) yields 2,971 books already made available (1,609 from the original lists, and 1,362 newly found this Fall).
While all 2,971 books have been assigned (at least preliminarilly) with a BHCTI "cluster" subject, only a total of 757 (297 in BHCTI Library proper, 460 in Too) have LCCNs assignments.

Just goes to show, there's work yet to be done!

Have been roping a few LCCNs and OCLC numbers at BHCTILibrary proper following a long spell of SACS documentation revision. More tomorrow!

Worship WMWOR cluster gathered in

The last few took longest, but all the initially selected entries from Google Books for Worship (BHCTI subject cluster WMWOR) are gathered in BHCTIToo and number 472 total items. Duplicates and items that were not (or perhaps are no longer?) on this examination designated "Full View" were dropped- approximately 30 titles were eliminated. OCLC numbers, subject headings, and Library of Congress Call Numbers (the last item particularly requested in SACS documentation for sorting and reporting purposes) have been roughed in for each entry. The next cluster to be worked in into BHCTIToo is Church Music- keep watching this space. My plan is to complete adding our previously selected items for accounting to SACS before beginning to find new materials.

Meantime, I'm adding to BHCTILibraryToo and adding the data to each new entry, to minimize backtracking. Both jobs are going on as a kind of tag-team approach.

Google tecs recommend no more than 2K in a library, but I'm experiencing 2.5 as the firm ceiling; will begin to populate a "new" library next week. There are some options to federate searching between free websites, so we needn't worry about interoperability even if the projected 20K are spread over 10 libraries...
Meanwhile, have added OCLC#, LCSHs, and LCCNs to the most recent 50 of the BHCTILibrary entries- will keep building on these for SACS....

A way forward

Nothing new from Google techs yet, but some judicious excisions and extractions confirm for my purpose the 2.5K ceiling of my Google Books BHCTILibrary account. The next 2.5K (to a total of 5K) will be placed in an "Annex" generously provided by Mrs. Day. More on that tomorrow- I am meanwhile hunting more OCLC# and LCCNs for the first 2.5K.

Temporarily arrested development

Glad I've been checking my ceiling- nothing I've tried adding today in excess of 2.5K into BHCTILibrary has taken. No documentation found that says this is a ceiling- but I've emailed the Google Book techies to see what's up. Several getarounds are possible, if needed.

Meantime, I'm gilding my lillies by finding OCLC #s, LCSHs, and LCCNs for found items (and when available, HathiTrust links) and squirreling them away in my "Review" section. Only the LCCNs are being turned into Tags; SACS will want to know what size the collection is, and percentages of the total being applicable to BHCTI by LCCN.

Back to Biblical Interpretation, and I've marked 2,500 into the collection; roughly double what's been intially found in those clusters previously investigated. Still building, there'll be some deconstruction later.

Evangelism breaks 1000

Zeal has consumed me; and though clever, ingenious, and sober methods of continuing on in this vein will occur to me, I'm temporarilly content to move again to some previously discovered materials in a different "cluster," I will for the moment stand pat with 1,044 titles placed under Evangelism (WMEVA) in our Google Books BHCTILibrary.

But I'll return to these so far amassed gleanings to tinker. Not only will some be appropriately listed (even double listed) in other clusters, I plan also to mine for Library of Congress Call Numbers (LCSH) when possible; our SACS application asks for a report of materials broken down by LCSHs.

Progress is being made on the Evangelism cluster (catalog WMEVA) selections in our Google Books BHCTILibrary; items above 411 are new finds (but don't preclude subsequent entries that will be appropriate to more than one cluster; more on that a bit later).

Eliminating duplicates and bad links brought my initial Evangelism list of titles to just 471 Google Books; the next step is to search anew for more recently-added material. Since I'm moving from a set of knowns to unknowns, progress may be slowed, but will still be steady.
